About the Study.

As part of my dissertation, I carried out research into the colour palettes used in computer games.

Questionnaires.

A big thank you to everyone who completed a questionnaire, the response was great!

Conclusion in summary.

N.B., the following is only a brief summary of the conclusions reached; please feel free to contact me if you have further queries.

“On reflection, it has not been possible to conclusively prove or disprove whether colour affects player progress in a computer game level as the test group is not felt to be large enough to provide meaningful data”

“The primary research was most valuable in that it revealed that some colours were more popular than others for certain item choices, and that both gamers and industry professionals stated that some colours were used more than others.”

“The health pack is most likely to be red, followed by green across a broad spectrum of genres.  Both groups agreed that money and rewards were mostly yellow then green, although a number of other colours were selected, so implying that games had various coloured items that were understood to be rewards or money.”

“The genres that were most represented were action, shooter, adventure and ‘RPG’.  Both groups stated that aesthetics were the primary influencing factor in the colour palette of the game they had most recently worked on, or played, indicating that there were no set guidelines being followed in their selection.”

“According to the responses from the gamers, the next most popular factor was the target audience, whereas the industry professionals felt that it was the artist’s personal choice.  Both groups slightly disagreed that the target console was an influencing factor, which is a particular point of interest as it shows that it is thought that there is no relation between target console and colour scheme selection.  Also of interest is that current trend or fashion was felt to be more of an influencing factor by the gamers.”
